In conventional terms, social distancing is anathema to mass transit. Yet enabling people to return en masse to the stations that are the backbone of our major cities is essential to ensuring a safe and viable future for our economies.

The existing physical configuration, operational logistics and financial systems that underpin our transport networks will need to be recalibrated to restore public confidence as lockdown measures continue to be lifted. The immediate design response will need to focus on adaptability.
